A fight against the water.In the twelfth century Marken became an island, and in the thirteenth century monks from the monastery at Mariengaarde in Friesland established an order here. The monks main source of income was farming and husbandry. To protect themselves from the water, the inhabitants build dikes around the island and houses were build on raised ground. In the fourteenth century the water broke through the dikes time and again, and for a time the salt water got the upper hand. The islanders built up a fishing industry, but the building of the Afsluitdijk in 1932 signalled an end to this source of income. Historic buildings and traditional costumesThe former island of Marken lies in the Guwzee and was joined to the mainland by a causeway built in 1957. Marken is world famous for its wooden houses and traditional costumes. Its very pleasant to stroll quietly along and see the small houses and shops.
